The Biden Administration has made its stance clear, dismissing a petition from environmental organizations that called for an end to oil and gas production on public lands by 2035. Despite the efforts of the Center for Biological Diversity and over 360 other climate and conservation groups, the Administration has opted not to pursue rulemaking for a phasedown program.
Laura Daniel-Davis, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Land and Mineral Management, cited limited resources as the reason for the rejection. While acknowledging the urgency of the climate crisis, the Administration is directing its resources towards other climate action initiatives. Environmentalists have expressed frustration, criticizing the Administration for its perceived lack of meaningful action. Nevertheless, the Biden Administration remains committed to advancing clean energy solutions while facing criticism for recent approvals of oil and gas projects, including the controversial Willow oil project in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska.
